Buona Vista’s Green-Eye-View

Planting the seeds of community

Lively Places Challenge 2023, Buona Vistas Green-Eye-View

To spark interest in gardening within their community, more than 60 residents transformed the multi-storey carpark rooftop garden at 7B Commonwealth Avenue into a photo-worthy gardening hub. The team gathered over two months to break the current record in Singapore’s Book of Records and create Singapore’s largest rooftop art display, which took inspiration from the neighbourhood’s Hakka heritage. The resulting artwork provided visual interest and relief for residents living in the neighbouring blocks as opposed to the original surface of the carpark. Additionally, the adjacent void deck was revamped with eye-catching signages and artwork to direct residents to the rooftop garden. Equipped with a projector and permanent seating, it can now accommodate regular workshops for residents beyond gardening.

Mural Painting for Dementia Wayfinding

Finding the way home through art

Lively Places Challenge 2023, Mural Painting for Dementia Wayfinding

To help people with dementia find their way around their neighbourhood independently, a team of dedicated residents created 10 captivating wayfinding murals and a feature wall at Stirling View, Queenstown. The team collaborated with 52 elderly participants to design murals that evoked cherished memories of the past. The Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) and Dementia Singapore were also consulted to ensure that the murals were effective for wayfinding, and over 110 residents came together to paint the murals. To celebrate this milestone and familiarise the community with the murals, the team organised a carnival on 16 April 2023, which featured educational talks to raise awareness on dementia as well as a photo hunt.

Gardens by the Roof

Building the bridge between generations

Lively Places Challenge 2023, Gardens by the Roof

Hoping to foster intergenerational friendships and promote food sustainability, a team of residents created a vibrant activity and gardening space at the rooftop of a multi-storey carpark at 673 Jurong West Street 65. Besides the allotment garden, the team set up a composting area and introduced a variety of play amenities to create a go-to spot for all ages. The goal was to create a flourishing garden that brings the community together through the sharing of resources, knowledge, and skills. The team also shared the fruits of their labour with fellow neighbours. Since its completion in early May, the garden now has 67 households manning the plots and receives more than 60 visitors each day.

Turning the Tides (We are all Connected)

Advocating for a litter-free neighbourhood

Lively Places Challenge 2023, Turning the Tides We are all Connected

To combat a growing littering problem, a team of Boon Lay View residents set about to raise awareness on how interconnected humans are with the natural environment. Through engaging excursions like litter picking on kayaks and inter-tidal walks, residents were able to witness first-hand the impact of littering on wildlife habitats. 7 families subsequently participated in design workshops to co-create 11 impactful murals (an ongoing effort) across 3 HDB blocks in Boon Lay View, which laid out their vision for a ‘Better Boon Lay’ and reiterate the collective responsibility toward our shared environment. QR codes featured on the main mural also led residents to information on community activities they could participate in.

Green Gaia

Reducing food waste through inclusivity

Lively Places Challenge 2023, Green Gaia

Having received feedback from seniors in their estate that it was physically challenging for them to participate in the existing community garden, residents from Spottiswoode Park created structural amenities such as a vertical farming area, greenhouse nursery, and a semi-sheltered rest area. With these enhancements, elderly gardening enthusiasts could farm with ease, and residents could organise regular gardening workshops to share their knowledge with others. The team organised a vermi composting workshop on 30 April 2023, where many participants expressed an interest to volunteer at the expanded community garden when it is ready by end 2023.

Love Thy Neighbour (Edition 4)

Encouraging sustainability through neighbourly bonds

Lively Places Challenge 2023, Love Thy Neighbour Edition 4

81 students and alumni from ITE College Central came together in the 4th edition of the Love Thy Neighbour project, with the goal of fostering inter-generational neighbourly bonds while promoting eco-living and sustainability messages in Teck Ghee. Across a period of 2 months, the students went door-to-door to share tips on sustainable living, collected recyclables, and conducted a workshop to demonstrate how recyclables can be upcycled. Their efforts culminated in an exciting and action-packed carnival on eco-sustainability, featuring activities such as performances, upcycling workshops, and game booths. Attended by some 900 residents, the event fostered a stronger sense of community and sustainability amongst neighbours.

For Our Kampung

Campaigning to discourage pest-bird feeding

Lively Places Challenge 2023, For Our Kampung

Inspired by past experiences leading ITE College Central (ITE CC) students in Lively Places Programme projects, ITE CC Lecturer Ms Charlotte Toh rallied her neighbours to embark on an initiative to reduce the growing inconveniences of pigeons congregating in certain ‘hotspots’ in their estate. The team spent hours every day observing and documenting when and where the pigeons congregated, before galvanising community stakeholders, such as the PCF Sparkletots@Fengshan Blk 184 and the parent support group at Bedok Green Primary School, into action. Together, they conducted online and offline educational outreach activities to raise awareness among residents and students on the negative consequences of pigeon feeding and the diseases associated with pigeon droppings.

Project Togetherness

Painting the strokes of unity

Lively Places Challenge 2023, Project Togetherness

Encouraged by the good response from his past Lively Places Programme projects, art teacher Mr Dexter Sim initiated Project Togetherness with his students from Westwood Primary School to strengthen bonds and foster collaboration among Jurong West residents. Through a series of specially curated workshops, participants were taught to unleash their creativity using both traditional and contemporary art techniques. These art pieces created under the theme "兔 gether" embody the spirit of unity within the community and will be displayed in an exhibition outside the Residents’ Network Centre. Mr Sim’s dream is to make this an annual tradition where residents can come together to create artworks inspired by the Chinese zodiac.

Memory Lane

Fostering a dementia-friendly society

Lively Places Challenge 2023, Memory Lane

After learning about the effects of dementia and aging through school modules, Republic Polytechnic student Sago Ryusei and his friends embarked on a mission to increase Singaporeans’ awareness of the condition. Roping in their school mates, they organised a carnival centred around active aging which consisted of games facilitated by Republic Polytechnic students and a booth by Dementia Singapore. The students aimed to equip the community with knowledge on the signs of dementia and direct people with dementia and their caregivers to available resources. Their ultimate goal was to empower individuals with dementia, families, and caregivers to lead a fulfilling life, and foster a dementia-friendly society in Singapore.

Project led by: Sago Ryusei, Gemma Fernandez, Jenny Ng, Alyssa Chan (Republic Polytechnic)
