The first precincts (Northshore Residences I & II; Waterfront @ Northshore I & II) at Punggol Northshore welcomed their first residents in 2020. Punggol Northshore will feature smart and sustainable initiatives to bring about a more liveable, efficient, sustainable and safe living environment for our residents. Beyond Punggol Northshore, selected smart and sustainable features will also be introduced to other new BTOs in Punggol and Tengah Towns.
Data analytics and computer simulations of environmental factors were adopted when planning Punggol Northshore. These provided us with useful insights to optimise the design and placement of blocks and communal spaces, to maximise wind flow and improve thermal comfort.
Wind Flow Analysis
Building layouts were designed to harness wind flow, and promote natural ventilation of residents’ flats, thereby reducing the need for electrical cooling.
Residents can comfortably enjoy open shared spaces such as playgrounds and fitness corners at any time, as they are located in areas shaded by buildings at different times of the day or year.
Solar Irradiance Studies
Areas with good sun exposure were identified for the deployment of solar panels to harness solar energy. Greenery could also be implemented at these areas to lower the ambient temperature.
Punggol Northshore will be equipped with a network of sensors to capture environmental information, which can be used to create a more pleasant environment.
Smart Lamp Posts
For example, smart lamp posts will be equipped with sensors and digital display screens to feature public announcements.
Smart fans also rely on sensors to activate and adjust itself in response to human traffic, temperature, and humidity. This improves thermal comfort at common areas, while reducing energy consumption.
To improve the management of estate services, Punggol Northshore leverages smart technologies to collect data for analysis, optimising maintenance, and pre-empting problems.
Smart lighting in common areas will be sensor-controlled and equipped with predictive data analytics tools to understand human traffic patterns. Lighting in common areas with little or no human traffic detected could be reduced to 30%, potentially saving as much as 60% on energy usage.
Smart Waste Management
Sensors in the Pneumatic Waste Conveyance System trigger the pneumatic pumps to optimise the collection cycle of waste, and allows for remote monitoring of incidents like chokages.
Moisture sensors in the soil monitor and optimise plant watering schedules and usage. This is a water-efficient and less labour-intensive approach to maintain greenery and landscapes.
Smart-Enabled Homes will be equipped with additional infrastructure such as additional power and data points at strategic locations, as well as smart sockets and a smart distribution board. These enable residents to easily integrate smart home solutions that can help monitor energy consumption patterns, and potentially reduce energy usage.
Our new generation parking system uses automation and real-time technological capabilities to provide for seamless entry and exit of vehicles, and in-app alerts for ease of payments.
We also leverage data analytics and ICT to better engage residents, enhance community bonding efforts, and empower communities to take greater ownership in co-creating their living environments.
Pulse of the Heartlands
The Pulse of the Heartlands is an ecosystem of applications and services comprising information on HDB towns such as shops in the neighbourhood. Useful data will be shared with the community to drive innovative applications that will provide products and services for residents, and enhance bonding efforts. Find out more here.
Data from HDB estates will be transmitted to the Smart Hub for monitoring and analysis to improve future town planning and building designs. The data also helps Town Councils improve estate management. Together, these improvements create a better living environment for residents.
