New Funeral Parlour Complex to be built on a smaller plot of land at current site
Singapore, 9 January 2018 – The National Environment Agency (NEA) and the Housing & Development Board (HDB) will be redeveloping the existing funeral parlours at the Mount Vernon Columbarium Complex into a new Funeral Parlour Complex in Bidadari estate. The new Funeral Parlour Complex will occupy 1.1 hectares of the 7.1 hectares currently occupied by the existing Mount Vernon Columbarium Complex. A map of the proposed Funeral Parlour Complex site can be found in Annex A.
2 This redevelopment is part of the Government’s efforts to meet the anticipated demand for after-death facilities and services as the population in Singapore ages. The new Funeral Parlour Complex will have 12 funeral wake halls, and it will be sensitively integrated with the topography and surrounding landscape, to minimise impact to future residents living around the complex. NEA and HDB will also be consulting the funeral parlour industry on the design concept for the Funeral Parlour Complex, and will incorporate suggestions, where appropriate in the tender for the design of the Funeral Parlour Complex. Construction works are expected to start in the second half of 2021, and the new complex is targeted to be ready in 2024.
3 NEA has informed M/s Singapore Casket Company Pte Ltd and M/s Mount Vernon Sanctuary Pte Ltd that the lease for their respective funeral parlours at Mount Vernon will be extended till September 2018. NEA has extended the leases twice and this is the final extension, after which the existing funeral parlours will be cleared together with the columbarium blocks as part of the proposed development of Bidadari estate.
