The distinctive and colourful roofs and linkway structures of the town evoke images of ‘pavilions on the green’. HDB’s first 2 30-storey HDB blocks are located in Bishan.

The oldest housing blocks in Bishan are situated around Sin Ming Road and were built as housing for the surrounding industrial estate.

The main housing area is in the vicinity of Bishan MRT station, with neighbourhoods sprouting up in Bishan North and Shunfu estate.

Today, the town is mainly a residential area, and is known for the distinctive sloped roofs found on many of the housing blocks. The town is also home to educational institutions such as Catholic High School and Raffles Institution.
