Facts and Figures
Bishan is located in the central part of Singapore, and the town has an estimated HDB resident population of 63,200. There are 20,072 HDB flats under our management (as of 31 March 2018).
History of Bishan
The ‘Pavilions on the Jade Hills’ or Peck San Theng cemetery which was once located in the area, gave the town its name and design inspiration.
The distinctive and colourful roofs and linkway structures of the town evoke images of ‘pavilions on the green’. HDB’s first 2 30-storey HDB blocks are located in Bishan.
Evolving Through The Years
The oldest housing blocks in Bishan are situated around Sin Ming Road and were built as housing for the surrounding industrial estate.
The main housing area is in the vicinity of Bishan MRT station, with neighbourhoods sprouting up in Bishan North and Shunfu estate.
Today, the town is mainly a residential area, and is known for the distinctive sloped roofs found on many of the housing blocks. The town is also home to educational institutions such as Catholic High School and Raffles Institution.
Bishan has its very own skate park for skating enthusiasts. Bishan Harmony Skate Park opened in 2009, and is located at the junction of Bishan Road and Braddell Road.
Junction 8 is the main shopping centre in Bishan, and is located conveniently at Bishan’s town centre. Residents and students of nearby institutions frequent the mall, and also the nearby Bishan Public Library.
