Rental housing is heavily subsidized by the government. They are meant for the poor and needy households who cannot afford to buy HDB flats and do not have other housing options. Tenants who wish to continue renting of their existing flats may apply for the renewal of the tenancy term, 3 months before expiry of the existing tenancy. The granting of tenancy renewal and the determination of rent payable are solely at the discretion of HDB. The renewal of the tenancy term is subject to the tenant being eligible to rent the flat and there is no breach of the term of tenancy of the existing rental flat.
