Evolving Through The Years

Jurong West used to contain swamps, low hills and thick jungle. In the 1960s, the government filled the swamps with land from the hill and Jurong was developed into an industrial estate with low-cost housing built for workers in the industrial area.

Jurong West is now the largest town in the Western part of Singapore. The town incorporates several older estates such as Boon Lay and Taman Jurong, and newer estates like Pioneer in the Jurong West extension.

The town and Jurong Point, one of the largest suburban malls in Singapore, are popular hangouts for undergraduates from the Nanyang Technological University. Residents can also boast of tourist attractions right in their own backyard, like the Chinese Garden, Japanese Garden, the Jurong Bird Park, dairy, orchid, and vegetable farms as well as the Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve.

A convenient spot to shop and dine, or to have a simple family outing is the Pioneer Mall located in Jurong West Street 61. It has shops with a comprehensive range of essential products and services like a hypermarket, foodcourt, fast food restaurant, convenience store, bakery and houses the first HDB Service Centre which offers residents the same range of services available in HDB Branches.
