Conveniently located in the central part of Singapore, Bishan’s accessibility made it one of the most popular HDB towns in its early days.
The ‘Jade Hill Pavilion” or Peck San Theng cemetery which was once located in the area, gave the town its name and design inspiration. The distinctive and colourful roofs and linkway structures of the town evoke images of “pavilions on the green”.
HDB’s first two 30-storey HDB blocks are in Bishan. Its oldest public housing blocks are located around Sin Ming as housing for the surrounding industrial estate. The main housing area is in the vicinity of Bishan MRT Station, with neighbourhoods sprouting in Bishan North and Shunfu. Newer blocks have also come up in Sin Ming, while the old blocks will be refurbished.
